Donald Tully Elkins, der unter anderem für einige Jahre als Professor für Physik und Ingenieurswissenschaften eine Abteilung der college of Alaska gegründet und geleitet hatte, veröffentlichte 1961 die vorliegende Sammlung „Extraterrestrial Communication“. Sie enthält Botschaften, welche die „Detroiter Gruppe“ von 1958 an empfangen hatte – in dem Zeitraum, zu dem Elkins dieser Gruppe beigetreten war.
Die „Detroiter Gruppe“ conflict im Umfeld der vielen außergewöhnlichen UFO-Ereignisse entstanden, die in den Vereinigten Staaten in den 40er und 50er Jahren verstärkt wahrgenommen wurden. Ihr Ziel, wie bei ähnlichen Gruppen, struggle es, auf foundation von Schilderungen von „UFO-Kontaktierten“ zu versuchen, Kontakt zu außerirdischen Wesen aufzunehmen.
Die Bemühungen dieser Menschen standen und stehen nicht in einem herkömmlich-religiösen Interesse, sondern entsprangen der Neugier an Paranormalität und der Existenz von außerirdischer Intelligenz. Dieser etwas andere Ansatz wird vor allem durch Elkins Arbeit und Wirken deutlich, der diese Kontaktaufnahme als ein wissenschaftliches scan verstand und durchführte.
Nachdem Elkins in der „Detroiter Gruppe“ die Methodik des „telepathischen Vokal-Channelings“ lernte, begann er ab 1961 eine eigenständige Gruppe in Louisville (Kentucky), mit Studierenden aus seiner Physikklasse, die er einlud an diesem test teilzunehmen. Aus dieser Gruppe ist L/L study und in der Folge auch der Das Gesetz des Einen-Verlag entstanden.
