Von allen Briefen, die Goethe von November 1775 bis Ende 1779 geschrieben hat, gelten nur wenige alten Freunden wie Lavater, Merck, Johanna Fahlmer, dem Ehepaar Kestner oder Augusta zu Stolberg. Dafür beginnen 1775/76 bedeutende Korrespondenzen, darunter die mit Herzog Carl August und vor allem mit Charlotte von Stein, an die Goethe in den folgenden 10 Jahren so häufig wie an keine andere individual geschrieben hat. Zwei Drittel aller im Band enthaltenen Briefe sind an sie gerichtet. In ihnen entfaltet sich Goethes wichtigste persönliche Beziehung des ersten Weimarer Jahrzehnts. Den neu beginnenden Briefwechseln, insbesondere dem mit Charlotte von Stein, sind umfassende einleitende Kommentare gewidmet, die eine Einordnung in Goethes Gesamtbriefwerk ermöglichen.
