Die Quellenlage ist schwierig und einige Ereignisse scheinen schwer erklärbar zu sein.


    Diese Arbeit wird versuchen, so weit es aus den Quellen heraus möglich ist, das Geschehen des Vindex-Aufstandes darzulegen. Wie guy sehen wird, wird die Arbeit auf einige interessante Ereignisse stoßen, die im Anschluss an die allgemeine Darstellung näher beleuchtet werden sollen.


    Hierbei wird einerseits auf die Frage eingegangen, welche Ziele Vindex mit dem Aufstand verbunden haben könnte. Andererseits wird erläutert, wie das zunächst zögerlich wirkende Eingreifen des Verginius Rufus zu bewerten ist und welche Schlussfolgerungen sich aus den verschiedenen Interpretationsversuchen ziehen lassen. Dabei wird auch die Haltung Neros in diesem Konflikt mit berücksichtigt und die angebliche Verbündung Vindex mit Verginius besprochen. Für diese Fragen wird die einschlägige Literatur zu Hilfe genommen und an Hand dieser die Veränderungen in der Forschung zum Vindex-Aufstand nachgezeichnet.


    Als Quellengrundlage dienen vier Werke, die aber alle eher knapp über den Aufstand berichten. Als erstes wird Cassius Dio und seine „Römische Geschichte“ herangezogen, wobei bei diesem Autor sich das challenge darstellt, dass er nur noch in mittelalterlichen Abschriften auf uns gekommen ist. „Cäsarenleben“ von Sueton und „Große Griechen und Römer“ von Plutarch berichten auch in Ansätzen von den Geschehnissen. Dagegen sind die „Historien“ des Tacitus eher unergiebig für diese Zwecke und werden daher nahezu nicht beachtet.


    Als Literatur werden vor allem die Monographien von Egon Flaig „Den Kaiser herausfordern“ und von Charles Murison „Galba, Otho an Vitellius. Careers an Controversies“ und die Dissertation von Herbert Graßl „Untersuchungen zum Vierkaiserjahr“ herangezogen. Äußerst aufschlussreich sind auch die Aufsätze von Hainsworth „Verginius and Vindex“ und von Syme „Partisans of Galba“.
